Blood on the Flat Track (2007)

Buy it now at Amazon.com!!

I love watching documentaries, and although this isn’t really horror related, it does coincide with my earlier post on Whip It and Ellen Page. Blood on the Flat Track is a true representation of what real roller derby is all about, women-on-women violence and lesbian love all in one sporting event. This feature centers around the Rat City Rollergirls hailing from Seattle, WA.

We hear the trials and tribulations of the four teams which comprise the RCR crew: Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, Throttle Rockets, and Derby Liberation Front. And, this isn’t just a lesbo sport, but also a mother-daughter and sister event, both as spectators and fellow derbiers. And, with names like Basket Casey, Darth Skater, Dirty Little Secret, and Pris Toff, how can you go wrong? Hot, goth-esque, Suicide Girl-type chicks (and Butches too) hammering the crap out of each other with bloomer-pantied butts everywhere. What a pervs dream!

Grave Danger

Sockit Wenches

I remember watching a few derbies on TV years ago, but after seeing this, I gotta see a live show! And, yeah, I know that some of it is orchestrated, but cat fights friggin rule, and maybe some chick will get her shirt ripped off in the process. This is a must-watch for all, and you’ll even learn a little bit about the sport's history and rules. So, since my words can't do it justice, skip Whip It and the Rollergirls series, and watch this instead. Then, travel to the closest city/venue sponsoring an event, and relish in chicks acting out their suppressed barbaric urges.

Also recommended is Hell on Wheels (2009), which chronicles the rejuvenation of Roller Derby in Austin, TX, the leagues that inspired the Rat City Rollergirls. You can stream it on Netflix.

Since we like to fellowship with others of our kind, we joined the Horror Blogger Alliance. Not that we're some dominant blog as of yet, but networking never hurts, and getting others to see and enjoy what we have to say is what this is all about. So, if you're a virgin to our site, Welcome, we hope you enjoy!, and if you're a returner, then Thanks for supporting us, and tell all your friends!

If you have any suggestions on what we can do better, or something you'd like to see us cover or review, please let us know. And, don't let our counter count fool you, we've been at this for over two years, but have just recently started tracking our hits. 10 horror tidbits from perusing the horrorsphere today...

Okay, so some of you may have already heard/read all of this elsewhere, but I thought it was worth mentioning, and even though I spent several hours unearthing all this knowledge, I'll sum it up for you.

1) Fangoria.com was offline for a short stint, but is now back up (at least somewhat). Problem is, the content is from mid-January. Many rumors have been floating around as to what happened/is happening, but are best summed up by The Jaded Viewer.

2) Child's Play is getting a remake. I ask, does it really need one? I'd rather see another film about the seed, Glen/Glenda.

3) Due to financial distress, Miramax Films closed it's doors, and The Weinsteins are feeling the same brunt. To make matters worse, they passed up the chance to distribute Machette (remember the teaser trailer from Tarantino/Rodriguez's Grindhouse movies), which is getting movie treatment later this year thanks to Fox.

4) Video Business Magazine is now out of business, which leaves us with Variety and Home Media Magazine. Sad, cause VB danced circles around both of them.

5) Within the last couple of months, Zelda Rubinstein, best known as Tangina from the Poltergeist movies, and Paul Naschy (if you don't know who he is, then shame on you) passed away.

5) Erotica maestro, Tinto Brass, is planning his next movie, the first 3-D porno. Nothing says In Your Face like 3-D porn.

6) Being a child of the 80's, I had many reservations about a remake to a movie I hold so dear, but after watching the international trailer for the new Clash of the Titans, I'm thinking it may be badass (not sure about the song blaring in the background though). And, the new Kraken is a frickin beast (see any similarities to the sea creature in Pirates of the Caribbean?).

This is the retro shirt I just bought on E-bay from teesmeewearme. It doesn't look quite this good, but is still pretty sweet, and I know I'll be the only one at the theatre wearing one. Yeah, and I'll be "That Guy..."

7) Bruce Campbell is back and will follow up My Name is Bruce with Bruce vs. Frankenstein. I guess we'll have to wait even longer for Evil Dead 4, the Evil Dead remake (which I'm skeptical about), and Bubba Ho-Tep 2.

8) Although innovative marketing of Ti West's House of the Devil increased it's allure with a DVD/VHS combo pack exclusive to Amazon.com, the film still sucked balls. I have yet to NOT be disappointed by all the hype around new retro movies. Then again, maybe I just expect too much.

9) Is it just me, or does The Silent House (the latest buzz film from Uruguay) look like a rip-off of [REC] and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre? That sound is sooo familiar.

10) Taxidermia will finally get a proper U.S. release on March 23rd, thanks to E1 Entertainment. Ya know, I've been sitting on my Region 2 Tartan release for probably close to two years now. I mean, I purchased it from Xploited Cinema, which closed it's doors in July of 2008, but just never got around to watching it. But, these pics are enticing enough to make me dig it out of the boxes I have yet to unpack from my move in January '09. Just too many DVDs and not enough time.

And, lastly, the most explicit pic can be viewed here. The Side Show isn't above showing nudity, but we don't want to get our domain name yanked either.

So, until next time, watch something that doesn't suck, and then tell me about it so I can review it. I'll give you credit, I promise.
