I posted a few thoughts on the Sideshow’s Facebook page after watching these, but wanted to spew a bit more. I was a frequent watcher of the Wonder Years, and like many other kids, had a thing for Winnie Cooper (Wow, have you seen her lately?). It was a program I anticipated watching and really related to, but don’t think I stuck it out for all six seasons. I also remember watching the specials Howie Mandel did for HBO, with many laughs following the rubber glove trick, and the voice that would later become Bobby (the animated series). So, it’s kind of a surprise I never saw Little Monsters.

In watching it recently, I thought it was a pretty fun flick, kind of a Beetlejuice (1988)/Drop Dead Fred (1991) hybrid, even though DDF came out a couple years later. Several faces and mannerisms made by Mandel seemed to be influenced by Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice, so it makes me wonder if any of the same producers were on both films. Please enlighten me if you decide to dig deeper, as I'm too lazy to do the leg work.

As for Munchie, I actually ran across it after finding Munchies, a Ghoulies/Gremlins style flick, which I will be getting soon. Within the first minute or so, I knew the voice of Munchie sounded familiar, and sure enough, I pegged it as Dom Deloise before the opening credits confirmed it. And, while Loni Anderson isn't hard to look at, I wasn't aware that a young Jennifer Love Hewitt was the female (kid) lead. The animatronics of Munchie were almost Showbiz Pizza Band laughable, and while it was an okay flick, the stacks of "to watch" grow exponentially, so it’s not something I'm rushing to watch again. A side note: Showbiz Pizza blew circles around Chucky E. Cheese, and many of CEC’s band are former Showbiz characters with new costumes after CEC bought them out.

There was a follow-up in 1994 called Munchie Strikes Back, but the only one to return was Jamie McEnnan (the lead boy), which looks like only a bit part. It is worth noting, though, that Angus Scrimm has a part as Kronas and Fred Olen Ray (softcore extraordinaire) plays a band member, but it's probably not something I'm going to seek out.

So, when are we going to get an official release of the entire Wonder Years collection and a Blu-Ray of Drop Dead Fred? And, it's a shame that only Howie Mandel’s first HBO performance is available on DVD, which based off the reviews, is a far cry from what I remember. I’d love to see Shout Factory pick up all of these and do them justice, as they recently did with the Beetlejuice cartoon, and the Halloween Special later this Fall.

It's a short post, but let's take a walk down memory lane until the next one:
Scared woman in a white dress + psychotic looking hillbilly + running chainsaw = intro to Savage Weekend.

This is one of my first ventures into the company Cheezy Flicks. I’ve read several reviews on their releases over the years, both good and bad, but one thing’s for sure, they’re stuff is cheap, and sure do have appealing artwork.

The print used is in fullscreen, but quite clean, and looked pretty good upverted on my Blu-Ray player. CF has released this title before, but recently decided on a re-issue with new artwork (above). Why, I don’t know, as I really prefer the prior one (below) which was used on Paragon’s VHS release, but I’m sure there’s good reason, maybe a rights or licensing issue.

This title has also been released by Mill Creek Ent. in 2006, Synergy Entertainment in 2008 (same year as CF), Desert Island Films in 2011, on several multi-packs, and supposedly a 3-D version in 2012, so my guess is it’s a public domain title and fair game to anyone who wants to spend a little dough to release it.

The story revolves around a group of people who come to the countryside to relax, party, and help build a boat, and also a hillbilly handyman named Otis, played by William Sanderson, who went on to become a veteran TV actor with appearances in the Lonesome Dove’s, Newhart, Coach, Walker, Texas Ranger, and more recently, Deadwood and True Blood.

There’s quite a bit of sex and boobs on display, including a strip tease and a scene with a cow’s teat that’s meant to titillate. The killer’s mask is kind of a Leatherface (1974)/Michael Myers (1978) hybrid, and the storyline blends with other backwoods horror films of the era, but there’s not a lot of grue, other than a branding, a hanging, a spike impaling, and some chainsaw action, with which Otis isn’t always the culprit.

The mask

There’s very little that’s memorable, but as a fan of the era, it’s cool (and laughable) to see the inspiration filmmakers borrow from other movies. Maybe pair this as a double feature with Rituals, so you won’t be so pissed off for the time spent. Not a great movie, but great artwork to accompany others in your collection, and just as misleading as many others were in the heyday of horror VHS, as video store owners smirked while stuffing your dollars in their pockets.

I’m not sure how long it lasts, but at the time of writing this, Cheezy Flicks has this on their site for 3.99, so it’s a cheap add for fans of this type of cinema, and maybe they have some copies of the old artwork left. Thanks to them for sending me a screener copy, and more reviews to come.
Just wanted to feature the new Code Red titles that have been released so far this year. I won't bore you with the details and purchase info, as you can view that on their site, but the titles are Exorcism's Daughter (aka House of Insane Women) and Night of 1000 Cats, Swinging Sorority, The Possessed (aka Help Me...I'm Possessed) and Demon Witch Child, The Vampires Night Orgy and Dr. Jekyll vs. The Werewolf, and Seeds of Evil and Touch of Satan. I have yet to watch any of them, but if you know how CR titles come and go and magically disappear, you'd better snatch them up. Good thing is, they usually ship within a week. Fifteen years after gracing us with her presence in I Spit on Your Grave, Camille Keaton returned to the small screen to do Savage Vengeance, a low budget film written and directed by Donald Farmer (Demon Queen, Cannibal Hookers).

While getting some R&R by the waterside, four dudes see an opportunity to take what isn’t theirs, leaving Jennifer violated and humiliated. Five years later, we see her revenge through flashbacks, and a jaunt into the woods becomes another nightmare, as her friend gets raped and killed by a couple of creeps, and not much later, she's terrorized too.

As with many low budget films, the acting and dialog are horrible, and is often drowned out by the music, which is looped and tiresome. Not to mention, rape/revenge flicks come a dime a dozen, yet they're still a very popular subgenre, evident by the remake of I Spit on Your Grave in 2010, which tended to cater more toward the new horror watcher and fans of the SAW franchise. Not one I personally cared for, as it felt like a watered down version of the original, even with the more extreme torture scenes.

As for Savage Vengeance, it’s not a great movie either, but did bring a smirk with the misspelled title screen, and nice to see Camille’s upper assets still looking quite perky. The simulated rape scenes were quite laughable in that you can clearly see her pants are still on, buttoned, and zipped, so the dudes were really just air humping her jeans.

This was intended to be a sequel and often billed as ISOYG 2, but doesn’t compliment it the least bit. I’ve heard that Camille has denounced it, and she even went by the alias Vickie Lahl/Lehl/Kehl to act in it. But, it does remain a must-own for DIY/SOV completists.

Originally released by Magnum Video in 1992, then onto DVD in 2000 by Eden Pictures as part of their I Will Dance on Your Grave series, which is now out-of-print. But, within the last year, it was re-released on VHS by The Uneasy Archive, limited to 23 copies, plus an exclusive version given away on Freddy In Space, and now, Massacre Video will release their DVD, VHS, and DVD hardbox over the next month or so. The VHS is limited to 100 copies and available now.
Miss Keaton is still active in film, recently being in Toe Tag Picture’s Sella Turcica, and helping to promote it by making appearances at conventions and screenings. She also has a spot in Rob Zombie’s Lords of Salem, but according to IMDb, the scenes were deleted from the theatrical version, so we may have to wait to get a glimpse when it hits YouTube or video.

I got the honor of meeting her at Texas Frightmare one year, where I had her sign a picture for a friend. Mind you, it was one of the nudie pics from her table, and she was very nice, appreciative, and not the least bit bashful.
I ran across this unposted blog from 2010 and decided to share.

Why am I such a sucker? It’s because I continue to buy Bill Zebub’s films. I guess it’s my unquenchable curiosity, or mere stupidty, but in the last few years, I’ve purchased pretty much all of his new ones (and resold some), and also gotten a few of the older ones at horror conventions, where I think he was peddling them 4 for $30, which I obliged. Much like newer Jess Franco films, you can guarantee a loose storyline, loose women, and tons of lingering boob and bush shots. Simply put, Bill's movies are made for perverts by a pervert (dang, I guess I just outted myself again). Not all of his roster of chicks (strippers, groupies, etc) are great looking, but don't seem the least bit bashful to bare it, which is why they got the gig.

Let me give you a little bit of history on Bill and I. I made the mistake of having my girlfriend sit in on a screening of Zombiechrist at Cinema Wasteland last year. Needless to say, she wasn’t the least bit impressed, and seemed rather disgusted most of the time. Plus, it didn’t help that it was late at night in a packed room with a bunch of drunks, who saw no fault in yelling at the screen. Sure, that’s commonplace at a convention, but rudities like “Yeah, give it to her” and “F*** the bitch!,” are rude in most settings outside of 42nd Street theatres. But, the more I watched, the more I was torn, as I wanted to walk out because I could see her discomfort, but I also wanted to stay. So, being the caring boyfriend I am, we stayed. I know, I know, what an asshole I am, but needless to say, I won’t happen again, as I'll be attending the convention alone this year, where Bill's supposed to unleash his 46th feature, Rap Sucks.

His latest feature, I Told You Not to Call the Police, is pretty much typical Bill, minus the blasphemous religious dialog and intended humor we've gotten from the others I've seen. Once again, the chicks can’t act, and awkwardly go through the motions, but still end up baring it all. Now, I’m not saying that Bill’s films don’t carry any jerk merits, but they’re usually once overs, then easily forgotten.

The highlight of the disc is the bonus feature, Assmonster, which is the sheer essence of how and why Bill’s guerilla films are made. All the humor is in this one, but Bill kept it to "tops off" only. He must not have had as much influence as he has today in making the panties drop.K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-18135840458637423852013-03-11T21:10:00.001-05:002013-03-11T21:27:59.382-05:00Stuff I Watched: A Thousand Cuts, Girls Against Boys, Demon Queen, Junk Films, American Fetish, Bunny Game, and Blood Beach
It's been quite a while since I've posted, so I can only hope that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and not fungus, as the Barenaked Ladies would say. While I've bought and watched quite a bit over the last few months, I haven't really felt compelled to talk about them at length. So, as I've done in the past, this is more of a video round-up, giving my brief thoughts on several movies, in hopes of steering your time and hard earned bucks in the right direction.

A Thousand Cuts--what a snoozefest. Luckily, I had a free Redbox rental, but sadly, I wasted it on this. Another movie that became background viewing while on the internet and I remember very little about.

Girls Against Boys--I didn’t have very high expectations for this, but it was a decent flick. Nothing really new as far as premise, but executed well enough to keep my attention, and the geisha scene was kind of creepy. Something I’d pick up if found on the cheap.

Demon Queen--while I’m sure Massacre Video used the best possible film source for the transfer, a lot of the picture was dark and sometimes muddy. This is the first and very obscure shot-on-video movie from 1985-86 by Donald Farmer, who also did Savage Vengeance (also being re-released by Massacre Video) and Cannibal Hookers. The biggest mystique around Demon Queen is that for such a forgettable movie, original VHS versions would sell for hundreds on Ebay. There’s nothing great about this movie, but for fans of DIY cinema, it’ll complement their SOV collection, with some blood and boobs to boot.

Junk Films--Oh, Junk Films, I wanted you to trump anything I’d seen before, and put the beloved Orozco the Embalmer to shame. I hoped you’d make me queasy and hang my head in shame, then feel compelled to hide you when others came around. But, rather than make we scream like a little girl, I got bored, and thought I was just watching another Traces of Death or Death Scenes rip off. Sadly, A&E’s Death Detectives: The LA County Coroner brought more (demented) pleasure.

While there are some interesting scenes, and the limited hardbox from Massacre Video is totally badass, the contents didn’t live up to the hype. What you’ll see are several accident scenes from India and Thailand, with bashed-in heads, loose organs, and blood trails. There’s also suicide, a few death rituals, and cremated remains, but much worse can be seen on the internet.

It serves as a good companion piece to Orozco (same director/photographer) and is worth having to complete your gross-out collection, but I know there’s much more Asian underground shock just waiting to be discovered.
American Fetish--this is a pretty tame look at the industry, following the story of a son exploring a murder and his father’s fetish films. It felt like a Cinemax After Dark movie, which come a dime a dozen and get little attention other than when T&A flash on the screen.

Bunny Game--If I didn’t know better, I’d think this was a Lucifer Valentine film, which much like his films, became tedious. What is it with bunny-titled movies and BJs? Brown Bunny had a full-on BJ and so does Bunny Games. Cocaine + prostitution + torture, sexual perversion and head shaving + lots of screaming = Bunny Games. Watch for sheer curiosity, then follow it up with your favorite comedy.

Blood Beach--I’m really surprised this hasn’t been released on DVD here in the states, seeing that it has John Saxon and Burt Young. This was my first viewing, and yeah, it’s not a great film, but does have a kick-ass poster and tagline (Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…you can't get to it.). This probably ran on late-night TV and was a big hit, but when lumping it with all the other horror films of the time, it’s pretty forgettable (other than the title). So, what’s taking people out on the beach? Is it a sandshark? A tremor? Someone living in an underground bunker? I won’t ruin it for ya, but I will say, the reveal wasn’t worth the wait. I’m sure it’ll be released in the future, but if you can’t wait, there are plenty of bootlegs running around, and you might even score this alternate artwork.
Scorpion Releasing (owned and ran by Walter Olsen, brother of William Olsen of Code Red) has made a name for itself over the last couple of years by releasing titles that have never seen the light of day on Region 1 DVD, re-releasing others with new widescreen and HD transfers (and added bonus features), and giving us some that were originally slated for his brother's company. Some of the more notable ones for this year were Mortuary, The Carpenter, Humongous, and The Day After Halloween, but their catalog isn’t just limited to horror and sci-fi.

Much like my big applause post for Scream Factory, I wanted to compile a list of Scorpion titles that are anticipated to hit in the remaining months of 2012 and thru 2013. Of course, not all of the artwork has been determined, so movie posters/VHS artwork has been provided for your viewing pleasure.
Again, I’ll update this as I hear new things, but feel free to join their fan-ran Facebook page (no official one has been opened yet), which provides new release info and a chance to discuss your favorites and future wants.

And, since I can't deny my love for Synapse Films and the great things they bring, they recently mentioned 2013 Blu-Ray plans for Hands of the Ripper (1971), Countess Dracula (1971), The Violent Shit Collection (Andreas Schnaas 1989-2010), McBain (1991), The Odd Angry Shot (1979), Slaughter of the Innocents (1993), and Thundercrack (1975).

Tis another great year for independent film companies, so thankfully I don't have to clog up my brain with more over-produced, over-CGIed superhero movies!!

I previously posted this comment on the Sideshow Review Facebook page, but think it ties in well with this post:

It's kind of sad that Intervision Pictures, Severin Films, Blue Underground, and Mondo Macabro (which all used to be leaders in releasing cult titles and forgotten gems) have all been pretty quiet this year and aren't releasing any new stuff, while Scream Factory, Scorpion Releasing, Synapse Films, and even Code Red continue to churn out quality films monthly. And, with Mya Communications and One 7 Pictures offerings being few and far between too, CAV Distributing Corp. (which already distributes Troma, Cult Epics, One 7, Synapse, and others), will start releasing some of New Horizons old catalog and more Roger Corman films next year.

But, for this post, I'd like to highlight Scream Factory’s releases (Shout Factory’s horror movie branch), which includes some long, sought after titles, several making their debut on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Scream Factory has been announcing new titles every Friday on their Facebook page, and while I am a follower, I thought it would be convenient to compile a list, as old posts will eventually drop off, and I don’t want us to miss out on any of them.
I think this is a complete list to date, and as more are announced, I’ll update it. Funhouse has already gotten hi-def treatment through Arrow Films, but unless you were lucky enough to snag one from the first batch, which were region-free, you’ll need the right equipment to view, as it’s now locked Region B. Second Sight Films UK has also announced a Blu-Ray release of From Beyond for next year, along with Re-Animator (already released by Image Entertainment), Bride of Re-Animator, and Society, and chances are, at least one may get Steelbook treatment.

Olive Films, which has been releasing some of Paramount’s titles (The Boogens), could get a shot at The Keep, and Synapse Films has rights to The Kindred, while Twilight Time has already mentioned Christine on Blu-Ray for Spring 2013.

With all these great titles getting released, you can finally replace your old worn out VHS and revisit them in remastered/hi-def versions, or experience them for the first time (as many I will be). So, what titles would you like to see on DVD/Blu-Ray that have yet to be put out or are now out-of-print (horror themed or not)?

My buddy, Jeff aka J3, formerly of The Rootdown and now No Sleep Till Wolflin fame, mentioned the BMX movie RAD from 1986.
Frequently, I track down films for friends, trying to get the best quality for the best price. Too often, these films haven't been released on disc, so VHS to DVD rips are bought from trusted sellers. While I like it when they come with artwork, it isn't a must, as picture and sound quality are more important. Some may feel this is a bad (and illegal) way to get movies, but I view it as providing a service to extreme cinephiles like myself. If there were official releases available at reasonable prices, I'd get those, but often times, only a tape was released, which may have never even made it stateside, or the DVD is out-of-print and going for gouging rates.

My recent task was to find a copy of The Seducers aka Top Sensation (1969). Already having seen or owned other Edwige Fenech films, I decided to watch it before passing it on. While the eye catcher should have been Miss Fenech, the tighter body award goes to the lesser endowed Rosalba Neri, better known for her roles in Amuck, 99 Women, Lady Frankenstein, French Sex Murders, and Girl in Room 2A (recently released by Mondo Macabro).

Rosalba (left) and Edwige (right) in full seduction mode

The basic premise of the movie is, of course, seduction, the rich using their money to control/seduce others, and murder. There’s a bit of incest too, but other than the constant sex set-ups (sex-ups?), which do get boring, Rosalba playing a shoot 'em up cowgirl, and a borderline beastiality scene where Edwige lets a goat explore her nakedness, there’s not much to talk about here. Sadly, it just falls in the pile with the other mildly erotic Euro movies of that era.

The captain's cap must have been the bait and switch

According to IMDb, Edwige had 7 other film roles that year, with the only recognizable one being Madame Bovary aka Sins of Madame Bovary, which was released by One 7 Pictures last year. Sure, I enjoy gratuitous nudity as much (maybe even a tad more) than the next man, but I’ve never really thought she was gorgeous, and if I remember right, Madame Bovary was a snoozer. After seeing this and a more recent picture of her on IMDb, I would argue that she has gotten more attractive over the years. Plus, her and Rosalba both had a certain ugliness throughout the film that even the T&A couldn’t mask.

If you’re a hardcore Fenech (or Neri) fan, maybe it's worth tracking down a bootleg as I did, but there’s still a chance One 7 or Mya Communications could pick this up for release, as it would fit nicely with the rest of their catalog.
As of late, I’ve started buying some of the less mainstream/more collectible packagings of movies, and even mentioned a few of the new and upcoming Steelbooks from the UK (Jaws, E.T., and others) in an earlier post. Although several of these are formatted Region B, thus requiring a multi-region player, they’re still must-haves for any movie collector. As I continue to search for great releases worldwide, I stumbled upon some more Blu-Ray Steelbooks that will be releasing in November, these will be region-free mind you.

With Ghostbusters 3 somewhat getting the green light recently, but at this point minus Bill Murray, we get a Ghostbusters Steelbook. (Sorry for all the white in the photos, but these are the best I could find and I don't have Photoshop to edit them)

And, with two remakes coming out (although one has now been legally stopped), and already having been released on many, many formats, many, many different times (where most of us have double, triple, or even quadruple dipped), Evil Dead will get "The Steel" treatment too.

Horror or not, it’s also worth noting that Hellboy will get an individual Steelbook release, having been already released in the UK in a Steelbook boxset with HB 2.

So, what’s the difference between Digibooks, Mediabooks, and Steelbooks, and why all the rave?

This website Blu-Ray Digibooks.com probably explains it best, but in short, the major difference in a Digibook and Mediabook (other than just regional terminology) is that a Mediabook is usually larger and contains multiple discs, whereas a Digibooks may only have one or two discs. Digibooks typically have a book-style binding, but Mediabooks may use an array of fold out trays. I’m sure there are examples where this is not the case, but from my experience, there’s clearly a visual difference between the two. As for a Steelbook, well, it’s just that, it has a metal casing around the contents and the artwork is usually printed directly on the metal. (See my last post showing the Basketcase Trilogy.)

So, which one is better? Most of the preference really lies in the eyes/hearts of the collector, but any of these are better than just a standard Amaray case release. I have some of them all, and the more collectible and obscure something is, the greater value it holds, not only to the owner, but for resale as well. If it’s numbered or limited, that’s even more enticing, and trying to get the first, last, or at least lowest number printed is the goal. Sure, they all have the same content no matter what number it is, but one feels far more superior having number 1354 than 4531 in a limited printing of 5000. I know it's laughable, and I’m not usually concerned what number I get, as long as I get a copy, but if it just so happens to be the first or last one printed, then bragging rights are inevitable.

Here are some pics of the Mediabooks I picked up from Germany (Again, sorry, the lighting sucked and I'm too lazy to re-take them):
Most of these were available at Diabolik DVD at one time, but I either piddle-dicked around or second-guessed the purchase, so I missed out, and as my obsession grew to own these, I had to find another source. Even though I already have the U.S. releases of TCM and LHOTL, these are far superior, if nothing else in look alone, as I have yet to watch either. I was very disappointed that Fox/MGM used the new giallo-style artwork for the LHOTL Blu-Ray (rather than the original DVD artwork),
and I hoped another version would be released that did it more justice, which the German edition does by leaps and bounds. And, as of right now, Blue Underground has no plans on releasing Mark of the Devil in high def, so this version was a great find. Plus, you can never have too many versions of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Anyway, I'll keep on the look out for international finds, and if you have any suggestions, please let me know. I'm still searching for a reasonably priced copy of the Dellamorte Dellamore Mediabook from ‘84 Entertainment, so if you know someone that has one, please let me know and we can play Let's Make a Deal. Thanks for stopping by!
Starting in August through Halloween, there are several anticipated Blu-Rays (and a few DVDs) that are hoping to make your pocketbook a little lighter. Since there are so many, I thought it was worth compiling a list to help you prepare, whether it be finding the best deal, telling your landlord you'll be a little short these months, or looking for a second job. This is obviously not everything being released, and I'm sure more will squeak their way in, but I'm really looking forward to these, and hope you are too.
Where Zombie Strippers, Cabin Fever 2, and Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! Strippers vs. Zombies left off, Full Moon Pictures picks up with Zombies vs. Strippers. I know, it gets confusing when there's very little variation to these titles, but when zombies and strippers are used in the same sentence, it's pretty obvious who the intended audiences is (pervs like me), no matter what order they're put in. If you’ve seen a FMP film, you pretty much know what to expect, boobs, blood, stretched humor, and mediocre, sometimes just laughable special FX. Well, ZvS doesn’t deviate from that formula, nor does it add anything new.

The Tough Titty (obviously taking inspiration from From Dusk Till Dawn’s Titty Twister) has fallen on hard times, and with no asses in the seats, that means no asses in your face. But, as the zombie hordes start to take over, it draws a few people in, including a musician with a wad of cash, a high-rolling business man, and some bikers.

What follows is pretty much what we’ve seen time and time again, zombies attack, people die, zombies die, people turn into the undead, and you know the rest. But, this is a stripper movie too, and while 3 out of 4 ladies aren’t afraid to take it off, it's still less than impressive, as we get Bambi’s B-cups (that may be too generous), Jasmine’s fake balloons, and Vanilla’s brown sugar goodness. Bambi has the looks (just no boobs), Jasmine's the airheaded bleach blonde, Vanilla is like a 70's Pam Grier, and Sugar Hills, played by Eve Mauro, is the mouthy, tough chick who must have had a no-nudity clause in her contract, as she's the one that doesn't bare em.

Overall, this film is pretty boring, and while Zombie Strippers (2008) offered a notable cue ball scene, ZvS really only adds a new zombie killing weapon, a high heel…on a stick! (Said in my best Jeff Dunham voice, of course). There are two scenes that may bring a giggle, when the stripper gets her face ripped off while getting boned, and the zombie Michael Jackson, but overall, it offered very little to put in my long-term memory, nor a want to revisit.

But, that’s not to discount Full Moon, which has helped the careers of many people, including scream queens Linnea Quigley and Brinke Stevens. In a time when most independent studios are folding or already have, Full Moon continues to churn out low budget horror and sci-fi, as there is still a market for it, and you can’t deny Charles Band his rightful place alongside Roger Corman.

Whether you liked them or not, who hasn’t seen a Puppet Master, Subspecies, Trancers, Killjoy, or Demonic Toys movie? Heck, I picked up the Blu-Rays of the first Puppet Master and Subspecies last year, and Mr. Band has plans to release others in high def, while re-releasing titles (for a mere 10 bucks a piece) that were previously only available in box sets. But, I'll probably wait, as I always look forward to their Half-off plus free shipping sales, so I feel like less of an ass if I pick up a crapper. I also proudly wear my Subspecies and Blade (from Puppet Master) t-shirts, in hopes that someone will know what they are and comment, allowing the opportunity to strike up a conversation of pure Nerdom.

ZvS probably won’t give you a chub, nor satisfy your zombie appetite (that’s what The Walking Dead and classic Romero movies are for), but I can see it destined for late night TV, along with Emmanuelle in Space and Lord of the G-Strings. And, while it isn't low budget erotica, it seems to have a place here.

Even though zombie and zombie-stripper movies have pretty much ran their course, and little can be done to impress me, I know there's many more to come (maybe even another Romero stinker), and yes, I will watch them, and hate them, and blog about them, and help you save your time and money, as this is the pledge I've made to you.
K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-69292112357669855282012-07-09T14:18:00.000-05:002012-07-20T20:35:38.517-05:00Movie and t-shirt scores from other shores
Over the past several months, I’ve been looking outside of the U.S. for cool things to add to my collection, be it horror memorabilia, apparel, or movies. I’ve seen some pretty cool stuff, and a couple things I missed out on (a Dellamorte Dellamore limited Blu-Ray Mediabook by 84 Entertainment and possibly a Mark of the Devil Blu-Ray), as I quarreled with whether I really needed them (in reality, I don’t, and my girlfriend (Heather) will strongly attest to that), or did they seem worth the money?

But, I did pick up a few things, and here are my scores:

From an Australian company called It’s Only a T-Shirt, Patrick and Wolf Creek limited edition T-shirts in VHS collector boxes. Wolf Creek also came with a poster signed by the director (tube on the left).

From the U.K.

Demons 1&2 Blu-Ray (Region B)—I would have picked up Arrow’s steelbook, but I wanted the different artwork options, and seeing these side-by-side looks awesome.

Eraserhead Blu-Ray (Region B)—the U.S. DVD is out-of-print, and to see David Lynch’s classic in high def, I say, Hell yes!

Return of the Living Dead Blu-Ray Steelbook (Region B)—other than just being badass in look and steelbook form, this has the original soundtrack (not on the U.S. release) and the documentary, More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead, which was released separately in the States.

Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-Ray Boxset (Region-free)—this contains the original 7 movies (only the first 3 have been released in the U.S.), commentaries and interviews, and a couple of episodes of Freddy’s Nightmares. Plus, it's region-free, so this was a no-brainer.

Phenomena Blu-Ray (Region-free)—an older Arrow Films release, which isn’t Argento's best, but still decent, and since AF almost always does top-notch work, I felt compelled to add it to my collection, only ever having owned the cut version (Creepers) on DVD.

Outside of the early 2000s, it seems the U.S. almost always falls short on their releases, when other countries do it much better and seem to keep the consumers and collectors wants in mind. For example, the U.K. will get steelbooks of E.T. and Jaws (both Region B), while it’s only rumored that Best Buy may have a digibook of Jaws.
Why do major studios in America no longer want to put in the extra effort? Do they feel we've become so consumed with digital delivery and throw away media that collectible packaging is no longer important to the mass majority? You can guarantee quality releases from independent studios like Blue Underground and Synapse, and every once in a while Anchor Bay (who dominated horror releases in the early 2000s) will do something noteworthy, but flubbed on the recent release of Battle Royale, only issuing a limited number of the Mediabooks, but keeping the same SKU for the first run of the Amaray case, which made ordering a potluck. Wisely, Amazon now has two separate listings for these.

Speaking of Anchor Bay and anticipated releases, when are we going to get Blu-Rays of Cemetery Man aka Dellamorte Dellamore and Re-Animator**? I e-mailed them last week, but have yet to get a response. I don't use Twitter, but last year, Barbara Crampton tweeted that a Re-Animator Blu was getting the final touches and should be out in the next 6 months, which that time came and went with no other word. But, I did get an e-mail today from U.K.'s Second Sight Films (who did the ROTLD Steelbook above) that Re-Animator, From Beyond, Bride of Re-Animator, and Society are all getting special edition treatment this Fall/Winter, and a Basket Case Trilogy Blu-Ray Steelbook** (the first Basket Case is available on BR in the U.S.) will be released in October with new artwork by the original illustrator, Graham Humphreys. Again, it just goes to show that some companies have their shit together while others do not.

Although you may already have a Blu-Ray player, most of these discs are locked Region B and/or have supplements on PAL DVDs, so you’ll need to pick up a Region-free player, which can be found on E-bay and trusted sites like 220-Electronics. Just make sure it will read Blu-Ray Regions A-C and DVD Regions 0-8, then you won’t miss out on any of these sweet releases while U.S. companies sit on their asses pondering what their return on investments will be.

**Update: Image Entertainment will release the Re-Animator Blu-Ray on Sept. 4th, 2012, and Second Sight Films has confirmed that the Basket Case Trilogy will be Region-free.
K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-16793166578169857382012-05-15T18:31:00.000-05:002012-05-15T18:45:40.468-05:00Is Bad Ass the Mexican version of Walking Tall?
I couldn't help but notice the resemblance of Bad Ass's artwork with that of the Walking Tall series. So, while we wait for Machete Kills, we can sustain our Danny Trejo fix with this movie. As a Facebook friend pointed out (Thanks Erika!), the fanny pack is what truly makes him bad ass.
For the past couple months, I’ve been pretty uninspired to do reviews or watch any genre movies. Maybe the recent move and career change are to blame, maybe I’m just in a complete funk, or maybe my tastes are changing (let's hope not). But, with my lady out-of-town this week, I decided to watch Nude Nuns with Big Guns, which as I mentioned before, has been sitting on my shelf for several months now, even before the U.S. release in February.

So, does it live up to it's name? Are there nude nuns? Yes, several. Are there big guns? Yes, but sadly, no bazookas (ha!). Are there nude nuns with big guns? Not really, but it makes for a great title anyway. I feel that many other films have captured the old grindhouse feel much better, and while I really wanted to love this movie, as I did Run! Bitch Run! (by the same director), I wasn’t really sure what it was trying to achieve. Is it supposed to be a true homage to other exploitation flicks, merely poking fun at them, or just trying to entertain on it’s own accord (with the help of familiar genre themes of course)? Maybe it requires more than one viewing, and/or maybe I'm trying to look too deep into it, but I walked away unsatisfied. Damn, that's what she said!

Was it a fun movie? If the 3 B’s are your only requirements to make it a fun venture, then I guess it achieves that, but for me, it was simply just watchable, with a few decent scenes. I do feel like the lead nun (Asun Ortega) was a great choice. She’s pretty, sexy, maybe even a bit mysterious, played her part well, and wasn’t afraid to bare her goods (bush included), plus, she was willing to make out with other chicks, even somewhat convincingly. But, everyone else was pretty much forgettable, acted poorly (possibly intended?), were given shitty dialog, and merely became fodder for Sister Sarah (light bulb!…was that the whole intention I missed?).

There are some things I have to call bullshit on, though, like the amount of shooting skill this nun had. It's like prior to joining the convent, she'd spent some serious time at the shooting range...or was it the hand of God guiding her?, because pretty much every head shot (and there were plenty), no matter the distance, was dead-on. I also noticed that the dead clergyman under the sheet took a breath as the head nun and lead biker entered the room. Some of the most subtle things catch my eye. The Titty Puller strip club was clearly a From Dusk Till Dawn reference, which I rolled my eyes at, but kept thinking that the witch doctor could have been played by Tommy Chong, which would have been an even slyer nod to the Tarantino classic.

I don’t really feel like this was intended for the hardcore nunsploitation fan, but rather a wider 42nd Street-type audience. Sure, there's nun nakedness, but it's more of a biker-western themed nun revenge flick, which attempts to exploit multiple sub-genres, like the newer film Dear God No!. On a side note, I'd really like to see DGN! on the screener list for Texas Frightmare Weekend, as I've heard nothing but great things about it.

Nude Nuns just had me walking away wanting to re-watch The Killer Nun, Alucarda, and The Other Hell. And while it’s sure to please some folks (heck, the tits alone may do that), for now it’ll just get lumped with the other films I really hoped would become conversation pieces, but ended up just being so-so, and therefore fairly unmentionable.K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-26858431319944465062012-03-13T14:36:00.036-05:002012-03-13T19:12:22.715-05:00Nailbiter (2012)
Not to be confused with the 1999 U.K. short film of the same name, Nailbiter (2012) comes from Patrick Rea, who has done a whole slew of shorts over the years, most making their festival rounds and a few were released on Fangoria’s Blood Drive and Hollywood Scarefest DVDs.

I first heard about this movie as a follower of the blog and Facebook page, Freddy In Space. It looked interesting, so I tracked down Mr. Rea and asked for a screener copy. I always love being one of the first to watch new indie movies, especially before they get distribution, and also help spread the word to support fellow low budget filmmakers.

The first 20 minutes will have you thinking it's just another Twister ripoff, but once the storm subsides, it becomes apparent it’s more in the vain of a Stephen King movie or After Dark Horrorfest's The Hamiltons.

In order to dodge a tornado while on their way to pick up daddy dearest at the airport, the Maguire Clan seek refuge in a nearby home's cellar. Once the storm has blown over, they try to exit, but debris has blocked the doors. So, little Sally tries to exit through a window, but gets bitten by something, so quickly retreats. Since cell phone reception is for shit and the people upstairs won't help, they place their hope in a moonshine still and a high-powered nail gun, which are found in the basement. I’m sure you’re thinking, either some MacGyver shit is about to take place, or drunken carpentry, but as things keep lurking and the body count rises, survival mode kicks in and the goal of getting the hell out of Dodge, or Wellsville in this case, becomes the dominant thought.

I could continue to throw out spoilers, but fear I may have already given too much, as this film deserves to be experienced, rather than just told, and alcohol-induced viewing will only enhance it. I'm not sure if a sequel is intended, but there's plenty of room left for one to follow.

Several people were cast very well. I really liked the grandma character, played by Joicie Appell, who proves you can't always trust little old ladies.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkxwPbfiup-6y_hJqjaVCGD2So-eyTxvvOG8XrlotYSklvTCRPtLDqLElwWO6OIPv0PgdHxYKJwzRTDTNioHu4okxZ95oa1gsPJJsMFDOggYkgBIdwSUv1pzcLwBSY51gmzg69UUkMga71/s400/Nailbiter+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719476018488264722" />
I also feel that Emily Boresow (Alice) has a bright future in acting, and her likeness to Emma Watson doesn't hurt either.

And, given a few more roles to hone her talent, badass Meg Saricks, who plays Jennifer, could be on her way to B-movie hottie/scream queen stardom.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 363px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDK2GEyKMFbeXs5RUw6JgjSg2_VRPzJVRqgMq9f5faAw8IfLfakvpaFbHl36_muFV6n3vCtoiAqqu7Pr1KhISco4Nzooush-sP-7klfYrZp12XipdwW1c3h6RPPimkas2Lgr89HlXh18QC/s400/nailbiter+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719483545413989762" />
The Blu Ray picture quality looked great, with vivid colors throughout the outdoor scenes and the darks were dark. The audio, however, definitely wasn't geared toward my TV's factory speakers, because I had to really crank it up in order to hear all the dialog.

I do have a few more gripes though. I felt that the portrayal of four chicks in distress was a bit off. Maybe this intended to be a girl power movie, but even with the hard exteriors that Jennifer and her mom held, as their kin started dying off, I’d think there would be much more hysteria. Hell, I might even scream like a little bitch in the same situation. Also, the creatures fell short. I heavily applaud the use of practical effects, and I’m not sure what I was expecting or hoping, but when the monsters were revealed, I was like, That's it? I was going to add a picture, but feel it's only fair that you make your own determination. So, seek out this film and let me know what you think!

I did like the feature overall and thank Patrick for sending it to me. I'd really like to catch more of his short films, and can't wait to see what SenoReality Pictures has in store next. Also, shame on me for not knowing that he directed Empty Acre, which has been sitting in my collection since 2007, still in the shrinkwrap. Seems like a good time to free it from it's factory binding and give it a watch.

Be on the lookout for Nailbiter playing at a festival or horror convention near you, and follow it's happenings on Patrick's Facebook Page!

K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-20015457796497461762012-02-02T18:40:00.021-06:002012-02-03T00:49:05.949-06:00Featured Friends: Robert Yates and Moonlight Films
Robert was a frequent customer at the entertainment store I managed and he later ran his own video game store for a short stint. As we talked, it was clear that he was a horror and sci-fi fan, and when it came time for him and his friend, Danny Nowlan, to film their first movie, I agreed to let them hang fliers in the store. Knowing that I wanted to be involved, I showed up to the audition and expressed my interest in helping with whatever needed done behind the camera. Needless to say, I ended up filming about 75% of the movie, never having any prior experience in doing so.

Undead on Arrival unintentionally morphed into a zombie comedy, and although it was bound by copyrighted music, went on to sell more than 20 copies and was screened at Hutchinson's Halloween festival. A few years later, FALLOUT, a Twilight Zone-themed short was shot, and while the camera was handed over to someone else, I helmed the executive producer chair. It was submitted to Wichita’s Tall Grass Film Festival in 2011, but was not selected, and is now available for purchase on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QWZJFE?ie=UTF8&tag=thsishre-20&lin

Since then, things at Moonlight Films have been pretty mum, but ideas for an "Undead" sequel are being tossed around. So, here's some thoughts from the man behind the magic.

What do you do to make a living?
I am currently finishing up my final stretch of an education degree. For the past ten years I worked in entertainment, selling video games, dvds, etc. in store and then online only for several years after.

If you could make a living doing it, would you want to make films the rest of your life?
Most definitely. I have some great ideas rattling around in my brain that are limited by time, budget, and talent constraints. I am an artist, and as such would love to make my artistry my life.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
I worked at Burger King for a year, that pretty much totally fucking sucked.

What are your earliest memories of filmmaking? Do you remember what your first venture with a camera was?
The earliest memories are of stop-motion animation with little Star Wars figures while I was still in high school. Even at that point, finding a camera that could even do stop motion, and that was not digital was getting tough.

What was the biggest difference or challenge between the two features you did? What would you do differently?
The biggest challenge with Undead on Arrival was time. We wanted to shoot it in only a day or two, but we had a great cast and support. In FALLOUT, the problem was casting. We simply did not have many people audition, and had to take what we could get. The script got sliced up from there.

What does your wife/family think of your filmmaking?
It's just kind of my thing. They get impressed when I'm in the paper, but other than that, if it doesn't make money it's considered a waste of time.

When can we expect to see more from Moonlight Films?
There is actually a ten minute short fully blocked out in my mind that I co-wrote with Moonlight Films Alumnus Chris Nolde. The only thing holding it back right now is equipment, cast, and location. It may be awhile, but it's on the plate.

What advice would you give to those wanting to make movies?
Don't be a pretentious asshole. I can't tell you how many people I have come across that think they are hot shit for making their first film with no respect for those that came before them, and those that are a part of the industry with their nose in the air because they belong to some stuffy Kansas film board.

We heard you used to be a musician and some of your music is in your movies, tell us about that.
The last year of high school and following several years after I traveled with my punk band through Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and once to Nashville. That was my first love, but Jimmy quit, Jody got married.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I used to be a video game nut, but these days most of my time is spent writing and following artistic and academic pursuits.

What’s your favorite video game presently and of all time?
My favorite video game currently is League of Legends. I've been pretty much hooked on it for seven months now. My favorite game of all time title would have to go to Max Payne. It was the very first video game that brought out real emotion and empathy, perhaps because I had just had my first child at the time, but I was never so into a role of vengeance like I was in that story.

Why do you like horror movies?
Life is dark. A smart horror story is worth more than a thousand sitcoms or romcoms. It's the same reason I don't follow any comedies, but watch tons of procedural drama.

Do you have a favorite sub-genre?
Vampire flicks have always been and still are my favorite genre. Even if Twilight has fucked up the genre.

What’s your favorite horror and non-horror movie?
It was hard not to go the classic route and drop some big names. I honestly would have to say the Evil Dead Trilogy. I have a soft spot in my heart for cheap, independent film that makes the best out of what is available. Add a timeless hero, too many quotable lines to count, a laughing deer head, and tree rape and you have the total package. Hail to the king baby. My favorite non-horror movie is no contest, Pulp Fiction. Hand me my wallet.

Who’s your favorite actor/actress/director?
My favorite director is Tarantino, my favorite actress is Kate Beckinsale, because she's Kate Beckinsale. Though I hated him as a kid having to be subjected to Titanic, I think DiCaprio is an example of true actor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Cpu89E4tHL_VE64VrNto1CT0mEYlClAq-a4ToxyTJWoUXJhpD06DTSOX7eCeJm4VsXy7yJm0YAKKBNwKR9u_yzLPNEByvaJSlxz2Ahuh2Jdm8OwmnXCZWkoK1p3YlSValAfCQkFEDRll/s400/kate-beckinsale.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704737724981477490" />
Best movie of 2011? Most anticipated title for 2012?
This was not really the biggest year for movies, but I'm going to say Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I wasn't even going to watch it until Danny Nowlan forced me to. I expected nothing and was blown away by how smartly written and paced it was for such a stupid premise. Outside of that, I loved the US version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. For 2012, I'm going to go all geeky and say that I hope they don't completely fuck up The Avengers. For next year though I have to say I am most excited for (unconventionally) The Great Gatsby as a literature major and Baz fan. Right next to that sits my excitement for Tarantino's Django Unchained. Dark Shadows has great potential too.

Where do you see the future of horror going and where would you like to see it go?
Storytelling. For the love of Thor, get some damn storytelling. I remember the year I graduated I started at "A" and went through every movie in the horror section of the local video store. What made it so great was the variety and intriguing story. Today's film lack plot and originality. Scare the shit out of me, but tell me a story worth my time.

What’s your favorite horror collectible?
My Twisted Land of OZ series.

What’s your favorite color and why?
Black, because it was cool before it was emo.

What kind of animal would you be?
A lion, they get all the bitches. Seriously, just watch some Animal Planet.

Favorite kind of food and why?
Pizza because I'm poor, steak if I ever strike it rich.

Favorite drink (alcoholic and non) and why?
Jameson's Irish Whiskey is God's gift to man. Sometimes a White Russian, the dude abides. They make drinks without alcohol?

What’s the oddest thing (quirks, etc) about you that only your closest friends would know, or maybe no one knows (until now)?
I pose, pointed out by Meghann Bates. I cannot stand straight up, I always cock out a leg and inject some swagger into any walk or stance. It took weeks of work to temporarily break it for her stage production.

Prior to the interview, had you ever heard of/read this blog?
Yeah, I check it once a month or so to see what's up with my old executive producer. The man has seen some crazy ass shit.

What did you like/dislike about it? What would you like to see in the future?
I like the full explications of the pieces. They never feel like phoned in reviews. Perhaps a full editorial comparing originals to remakes, or classic film to current in regards to horror?

What’s your fondest memory of me/us?
Probably the wrap on FALLOUT and the many bizarre conversations with Jon Dudrey and Fleetwood coming up with the craziest bullshit for films pitches. That, and you getting us to actually film "Bang, Bang, skeet skeet bitches!" as a line.

If you could sum up your life in one word or phrase, what would that be?
Fuck.

Anything else you’d like to add about your job, life, movies, or just general randomness?
Religion is retarded. To be serious though, we live in the one state that does not have an arts program thanks to Brownback. It's time the artists and those that enjoy their labors stand up to the governor and make art a central part of Kansas life again. Art and education do more good than any one bomb dropped on a middle eastern tent. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox...but religion is retarded.

Thanks for the great interview Robert! While it's still available, you can check out some of the past happenings of Moonlight Films on their Facebook page. The more support it gets, the better chance of stuff getting made, because sometimes Robert needs a swift kick in the ass for motivation. :) Also, if you're interested in buying a shirt (black with the logo below) to help support the cause, contact me or leave a comment with your e-mail address and we can work out deal. Quantities and sizes are limited.

A few months ago, I ventured back into German splatter cinema with Necronos Tower of Doom, which I thought was pretty well done. Tonight, I decided to tread on familiar ground, but take it back a few years with Heiko Fipper’s Ostermontag, which I'd seen on many people's “extreme” lists, so I had to track down a copy.

The alternative title to this is I Spit on Your Fucking Grave Bitch!, which not only automatically sparked my curiosity, but also set the stage for some big shoes to fill. When you play off the title of a more renouned movie, you're expected to live up to it, but more times than not, you get something much more inferior, and sometimes even down right laughable. I really wanted to be blown away by this film, and was hoping for a visual assault in the likes of A Serbian Film, but as many low budget features have used the bind and torture premise to titillate and desecrate, this one does a pretty poor job on most levels and I walked away in disappointment.

It wasn’t the fact that I couldn’t understand any of the dialog (it's in German with no subtitles), but the hype around it alone already had me jaded, and it was put on a pedestal it was never deservant of. While there are some decent gore and FX scenes, the rest is forgettable, and had it just been whittled down to a shorter movie of sheer visceral carnage, I would've walked away happy.

Some of the gore scenes are worth mentioning, but the extremely watered down blood stock that was used just made my eyes roll. Red paint or ketchup would have looked better than this crap, but the following scenes are the highlights (in no particular order):
1) the stairwell head-smash scene
2) death by vacuum suckage
3) lip bondage
4) knife in pants/bunghole violation
and
5) the last scene which involves extreme orifice torture and a spinal blowout.

Sure, this will easily offend those without an untrained eye, but once you realize it's a rubber mannequin, you might feel a little less dirty about what you just witnessed. I also feel it would've been more impactful had it not been so drawn out. Sure, a bunch of rowdy drunks would hoot and holler in approval at the sperm-drenched spinal tap scene, but sometimes you just gotta know when to cut the shot and move on.

Mr. Fipper is better known for his film, Das Komabrutale Duell (1999), which I reviewed back in 2008. Again, some of his gore antics can be applauded, but the very loose storytelling becomes cumbersome and the fast-forward button should be readily at-hand. While German splatter has really yet to hit the mainstream, Intervision Pictures has dug into their vaults and will release Olaf Ittenbach’s <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0060AAMEI?ie=UTF8&tag=thsishre-20&lin

If this review has left you a bit dumbfounded and wanting more, you can purchase Ostermontag over at Twisted Anger for around 10 bucks. No artwork is provided (I borrowed the picture above from an online source), but it does come with two other short movies and some behind-the-scenes stuff. The first short is what I like to call, "Our adventures in learning CGI," and the other I zoned out on after several minutes of watching people eating pizza and talking. Again, these are in German with no subtitles, but be sure to check out the other titles Twisted Anger has to offer, as his Deluxe Editions are superb! Where else can you find Psycho: The Snuff Reels, The Video Dead, and The Town that Dreaded Sundown at such great prices and quality?

And, even though I hated this film as a whole, I can't seem to get it out of my head. Maybe I'll revisit it in a few days if it's still lingering, but I've gotta hail Jörg Buttgereit as the king of German horror, and really wish he'd make another movie, but not that Captain Berlin vs. Hitler schlocky shit.

For the new year, I thought I'd try something a bit different here on the Side Show Review. Since I hang around some pretty cool people, I thought I'd do a few Featured Friends posts to introduce you to them. I asked them an array of questions, ranging from their occupation to movies to just randomness that I hope will not only educate, but entertain you. So, my first guinea pig for this experiment was my friend Bryce.

I’ve known Bryce since high school, and we even played freshman baseball together, well, he played, and I rode the pine with other friends. Last year, we reconnected through that wonderful thing called Iruleyourlifebook, err, I mean Facebook, and I found out some interesting things about my old friend. He’s not only a big horror movie fan, but he makes custom novelty caskets. Whaaaaat? Yeah, my interest was definitely peaked too, so let’s delve into the mind of this maniac.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfDFGeoakYaxlN0oB85BpecwyMNtiPHIrkwrzXhU-dbActfXH9gI8o0cB5rFeC9gUKEsOM6O6cjB9KNXvQYc4QSUKQ_D4XIRVUVN_sbE98pm7qRSAa1iXopgvnmbgfZN3trhq2iL3YnWI/s400/bryce.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699628054722102146" />

Maniac you say?

After high school, where did your diploma take you?
I worked for the sheriff's department for a while, then left law enforcement to run Har-Bell Athletic Goods for ten years.

What do you do now to make a living?
I work for Lindbergs Tavern, it is Springfield's oldest bar. It served as a whore house, a bank, and a bar in the 1920's. There's a lot of history in the building, I miss the whore house aspect of it!

What’s the worst part about this job?
I hate after we are closed and are cleaning for the next day, the girls bathroom is disgusting! They are worse than men, then they leave their bloody corks in the trash can. There should be some kind of rule about this.

How do you deal with drunk people?
For most that know me, I get irritated very easily… But for the most part it doesn’t get too out of hand, but I do have the occasional dumbass that goes a little overboard. I give them one chance to get in line, and if they don’t, I physically remove them whether they like it or not.

What’s the wildest thing you've witnessed in the bar business?
Rumor has it, that the bar is haunted and we have heard that for years. Myself and Eric were cleaning one night and it was only the two of us in there and I turned to see what looked like a black outline of a person standing at the bottom of the stairs looking at us (A Shadow Person). I said, "What the fuck is that?" and turned to Eric and he was looking at it as well. It just kind of drifted back up the stairs. I went up the stairs to look for it but it was gone. It literally gave me goosebumps and Eric doesn’t like talking about it. I thought it was pretty cool, I want to see something that scares me so bad I pass out.

What other job would you like to do?
I wish I knew more about special effects make up, I really like the fact of being able to turn someone into a bloody brain eating zombie. I really like watching (Face Off), just to be as creative and messed up as you can.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend a lot of time on the rivers, fishing and drinking beer. Just taking it easy with friends, and I do a lot of grilling and cooking.

Tell us about how you came up with the idea of Rottbox Caskets (what is it, pricing, etc)?
I thought of it while watching a life insurance commercial. They were talking about the expense of being buried and coffins, and I thought I could do them cheaper and a lot cooler looking. I was originally going to call them (To Go Boxes), but thought RottBox sounded better.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 142px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4i9QDMuV69rmEGwFATUEfBidiKXFteeQJU-4yGWEUhrxRnPkCmDaF5t_l3natgZBUn-L1upAeT-2mVaCeLK7E-_ZBdYLGbBF09cve_33124Xg0tpu_G05ZgnYUwm92r0sj7sMwt4wXsIT/s400/rottbox+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699617530304039058" />
RottBox Caskets are decorative toe pincher style caskets, made of treated pine and built to your request. I then paint them with any horror theme you would like. I have done everything from Pinhead to Clockwork Orange. I start them out at about $300 and they go up in price depending on what all you want done.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF-6nj1VoV44sjVHhyuraDHajQ0Ed5VTgS53LDHGdoOuYm7yXhgKOE3_selN04Jh6gnM3mkv8mMGWLBOS8es5NI0fsMwi13DauWwl6bquwpACkBMzSYCFwZ7eFZTs5sWrL-V5aDgtNeUpR/s400/rottbox+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699617870478664898" />
How many have you sold and what’s the oddest casket request you’ve had?
I have sold about 50 to date, and have sent them from Beverly Hills to Germany. As far as odd, not too many odd requests, built one in a child’s size which I thought was pretty cool because I find anything to do with kids creepy. I actually own a child’s casket that was originally used back in the 1890's. A cemetery was over crowded and they dug up all the old ones and needed to get rid of them, so I bought it.

Are there any requests you won’t do?
Not at all, if you can think it, I can build it. I built one with a hidden liquor cabinet in it, and that was pretty cool.

Why do you like horror movies?
I like horror movies for the fact you never know what’s coming. You have the good ones and the bad ones, but either way they are just fun to watch.

Do you have a favorite sub-genre?
I do like zombies, but only if it is a good Zombie movie! Too many people are making really shitty zombie movies these days. Even Romero is making shitty films now. I think film makers could learn a lot from the Walking Dead series.

What’s your favorite horror and non-horror movie?
Favorite horror movie, I'm not real sure you would call it a horror movie or not, but the original (When A Stranger Calls) is pretty crazy and freaks me out. The Devils Rejects is a solid favorite of mine as well, a family that is by far worse than the Manson family.
Non-horror movie, probably (Chopper), The life story of Mark Brandon Reed, [he’s] One crazy bastard.

Best movie of 2011? Most anticipated title for 2012?
There really wasn’t a movie in 2011 that I wanted to see, kind of hard to want to see anything when all that comes out are pieces of shit like Paranormal Activity.
Most anticipated movie for me, (Lords of Salem) just to see Sid Haig in another film.

Who’s your favorite actor/actress/director?
Favorite actor - Sid Haig - I like him just for the creep factor as he brings, he was great in The Devil’s Rejects as Spaulding, and I even liked him as the alcoholic clown in Little Big Top.
Favorite director - Lucio Fulci - His movies really don’t make much sense, but they are blood soaked.

What’s your favorite horror collectible and why?
I would have to say my "Pigo The Clown" figure from Quarantine studios. I have a weird fascination with clowns, I guess I can say I owe it all to John Wayne Gacy.

What’s your favorite color and why?
I would have to say Black, I don’t really know why, but 90% of my shirts are black. Maybe because black is supposed to be slimming.

What kind of animal would you be?
Probably a sloth, because they aren’t very good looking and neither am I. They try to avoid a lot of other animals in the same manner I try to avoid a lot of people.

What’s your favorite candy/candy bar and why?
Probably the Mr. Goodbar, who doesn’t enjoy a chocolate covered peanut?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9gaJVTKjzEAdkeeerVECruSi0pbYmz5-KHKgyTUhi_0OnQdUY3K093BmXvTVxuaJ-Qw6EAX40P0zXVtJ4J9u-ow9oZRn9UVqv9Dhu21125zZMwRp05l72GeJ-A0mtsCF64YNDWrwTwXPS/s400/mr+goodbar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699638499901905042" />

Random internet chick who couldn't resist the peanutty goodness

Favorite kind of food and why?
Anything cooked in a smoker or on a grill, the smell of the smoke and the flavor of the food is just a delight.

Favorite drink (alcoholic and non)?
Non-alcoholic - unsweet tea.
Alcoholic - red beer - beer with clamato juice, not tomato, but clamato.

What’s the oddest thing (quirks, etc) about you that only your closest friends would know, or maybe no one knows (until now)?
I am deathly afraid of heights and airplanes, I don’t like shirts with wide necks, [and] I have to rub my eyebrows about 20 times before I put a hat on.

What’s your fondest memory of me/us?
Probably have to go back to the days of hide and seek, just two broke kids playing in the yard and making Kool-Aid.

Well, there you have it, that's Bryce in a (pea)nutshell. Thanks, buddy, for taking the time out to answer my questions! I hope all who read this, not only found it informative, but maybe even got a laugh or two. Bryce is quite the character, and most nights you can catch him working the door at Lindbergs Tavern, located on the corner of Campbell and Commercial Street in Springfield, MO. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKC-7_S8vJTSK0skOPIr76JxcwhlxhbVf0kWVfey3T14HAqSR9qfxRHnv6AkXf4nBOeubH0-hh32Qp2Q5oHlRTGVSTmr6YQcqbhBj4kmkHd38bMWZkTOODWpf_pM5lhBu0H_C-Voqgj0vy/s320/hostel+3-4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696629276107289874" />
While Hostel 1&2 had gritty scenery and lots of atmosphere, Part 3 looked polished and never hit "believability" status for me. Sure, Sin City seems like a great place to pick up the story, but trying to top earlier (better) storylines and cameos of Takashi Miike and Edwige Fenech is tough. So, rather than using the madness of the city and all the wicked things that lie beneath it to their advantage, we're left with something equivalent (snooze factor-wise) to one of the later Final Destination movies, excluding #5, which is pretty bad ass.

There were a few twists which I hoped would play out to be worth while, but they ended up adding nothing, and along with the shitty CGI, extremely lame kills, and the stupid ass ending, I felt like I had treated my dishes unjustly by watching this over washing them.

The premise is pretty simple: Before he ties the knot, Scott and his buddies have one last night out on the town, but things don't go as planned. (Do they ever?) People come up missing, then end up dead, and the game of survival is on.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg83DZxyKy1J2cOMKZTwZzJFx_KI6pUnzQ2DOTlDcQ32APVreKOGkkqnbM1lMLn8e2jPV_zVBTadn3w0LHzauNsb3LoJDTqMRHYa1LtucE_rFwfw6yovhcb2OoDA443FCytDy-truAP8R5e/s320/hostel+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696633107013606514" />

With friends like these, what could go wrong?

There were also some monotonous things, as if they were just added to expand the running time, like too many shots of doors being opened by tattoo recognition (Elite Hunting Club tats of course). I was like, Dude, we got it the first time, so let's move on! And, there were way too many ass shots. Did I really say that? Yeah, I did, and while I enjoy a nice derriere as much as the next man (or woman), they can get old. It's like they knew the story sucked, so they'd just pan down the booty cam in hopes of distracting us, so much that it could have been called Hostel 3: The Elite Ass Hunting Club, or just Hostel Asses. Hey, make sure I get credit when the porn parody comes out.

I just felt that this was a very unnecessary entry in the franchise, and even though Scott Spiegel (Intruder, From Dusk Till Dawn 2) directed it, it should've been left alone. Trust me, not every movie with a sequel needs to become a trilogy, it’s okay to only have two.

My last post started the finger pointing, so I'll continue it by calling Shenanigans on Arrow Films for releasing the same Blu Ray titles as Synapse Films. Sure, one can say they were released for totally separate markets, but region-free discs mean world viewability, so that doesn't really hold up.

As I’ve mentioned before, Arrow Films took me under their spell in early 2011, and even though several of their titles were also released by Blue Underground, the artwork and packaging drew me in and I just had to add some to my collection. After buying 5 or 6 titles, a cautionary flag was thrown up when I heard that Fulci’s The Beyond was released with a black and white intro, and although Arrow sent corrected discs to those who requested them, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I was really excited to see that Battle Royale was finally released on Blu Ray, but come to find out it was in Region B formatting only, and when I tried to take advantage of a big sale on their site, my credit card company called to say they declined the transaction because the processing company Arrow uses was suspected of being compromised, and sadly, they didn't offer payment through Paypal. It wasn't until John Russo’s Midnight and Linda Blair’s Savage Streets were announced that my interest was revamped, but come Fall, they started piggy-backing Synapse Films releases of Exterminator, Maniac Cop, and Frankenhooker, which made me question them yet again. And, even though both companies released them with new HD, region-free transfers, the bonus content and artwork were different.

Similar to Arrow, Synapse started putting reversible sleeves in their releases in 2011, but used variations of the original artworks, whereas Arrow offered artist re-envisions. While I don’t have any ties with the folks across the pond, I do with Jerry and Don at Synapse, who I met at Cinema Wasteland, and are really cool guys. So, since I already have the Synapse versions, is it really worth double-dipping? And, who do you think did it better?

Putting remakes aside, have you ever looked at the artwork for a new movie and thought, I've seen that before? I'm sure you have, especially in the last few years, as marketing depts are lazy these days, and just rehash images to suit their needs. I recently had a light bulb experience when I saw the coverart for Nude Nuns With Big Guns, which will be released by Image Entertainment on February 14, 2012. So, what did it look like? Kevin Smith's Red State.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 345px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPPGYmb5UqhWYi_bW0VMoc1O7J0tDsjR2CbuR4omdeMdkCuOyE8cQ5_16kAbasDNAxdeUwKU-aUgfKnbZChuPPUGJkFWp16Sh4GLlSBuXaYtt5s1c079jLTPuyL1J2zdTwypDTJRcBvZ-_/s400/nuns+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676142809583416130" />
It shouldn't be a surprise, but I was a bit stunned by how similar they look. Sure, one has some chick looking up into the heavens and the other has a nun who's nodding in prayer, but both have a big ass gun, and neither look too shy to use it. And, is it mere coincidence that both stories have a religious base? I’m sure one can find more instances of artwork like this (chicks embracing high caliber weapons), but this seems a bit blatant on Image's part, seeing that Red State was released here in the states first. Now, Nude Nuns was actually released first, overseas, but with different artwork.

I could be totally off base in thinking that Image ripped off Red State, as it may have been part of the international marketing campaign all along, but several websites had this picture when Image announced their release.

All three, a bit different in significant ways, yes! Anyway, Nude Nuns With Big Guns is the second feature from Joseph Guzman, who brought us Run! Bitch Run!, which I unofficially proclaimed as 2009's Movie of the Year. Now, I failed to give Run! a proper review, but it was the holidays, and I was knee-deep in retail hell, so please forgive me. It's one I need to re-watch, then maybe I can give it the dues it deserves.

If you want to pick up Nude Nuns before the pack (like I did), head over to Amazon and get an import region free Blu Ray for about what the U.S. release will cost on Valentine's Day.K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-36704381000299642692011-11-13T01:26:00.035-06:002011-12-07T12:21:20.071-06:00Necronos Tower of Doom (2010)
When I think of German horror, Jörg Buttgereit, Olaf Ittenbach, Andreas Bethmann, and Andreas Schnaas come to mind. While I’d say that Jörg mastered the craft with Nekromantik 1&2 and Schramm, I hear good things about Olaf, but have yet to see any of his films (even though Premutos and Dard Divorce sit in my collection). I ran across Andreas Bethmann several years ago through Xploited Cinema, and really liked his work, but Andreas Schnaas's Goblet of Gore looked like a 3rd generation VHS dub and seemed a bit too low budget for me (maybe it was just the copy I had).

This brings us to a new name in German splatter cinema, the Rohnstock Brothers (Lars and Marc). I ran across a mention of their newest film, Necronos Tower of Doom, while browsing the internet filling my head with “all things new in horror.” Since there’s so much out there, and everyone’s making a movie these days, I put on the Side Show waders and looked for the cream of the crop. I liked what I saw in the trailer for Graveyard of the Living Dead, and sent Infernal Films an e-mail requesting a screener, not knowing if Necronos had even been completed. Lars replied, and sent me a copy of Necronos, saying that Graveyard was out-of-stock, but he'd be getting more soon.

The basic story is this, Necronos is a wizard who makes a pact with the Devil to gain immortality. In return, he has to enslave the souls of his victims to build the army of darkness, who will do the Devil’s dirty work until he can come to earth and rule. But, the army ends up being a bunch of pussies, so to push progress along, the Devil requests that Necronos find a virgin witch, and send her blood to hell (this will strengthen the army). Well, the witch he finds turns out to be a slut, and so the undead horde remains flaccid, which gets him caught by the king’s men, stabbed repetitiously, decapitated, dismembered, and burnt.

Quite a chunk of plot to swallow, I know, but years later, he comes back to finish what he started, now armed with a demon henchman, Goran, to help reassemble his army, and an old witch to help find a virgin with “the gift.” What follows is a bunch of people getting kidnapped, bound, sliced and diced, beheaded, thrown to the zombie horde, juiced (a big machine actually does this), and impaled. And this time, Necronos is finally the victor, so hell on earth shall commence (maybe that'll be in Part 2).

Hi, I'm Necronos...or maybe one of the Star Wars guys

I must say, I wasn’t disappointed with this film. It delivered tons of blood-splatter, boobs and full frontal (male too, for the ladies), and severed body parts a plenty. The one big gripe I have is about the runtime (a bit over 2 hours). Once it hit the hour 30 mark, my interest had peaked, and the bogged down story took a backseat to me just wanting to see the next visual assault…...or more boobies!

There were some great gore moments, though, which included the double decapitation, animation of the berserker (who was really only used for one scene :( ), and the pregnant lady sacrifice. While I don’t condone Preggosploitation, I give them props for having the balls to take it to that level, I mean, these days you gotta compete with what the French are bringing (the movie Inside). And, one of the most stand-out scenes is the vaginal impalement, an obvious ode to Cannibal Holocaust.

When low budget films try to tell a semi-complex story, there's almost always downers. The decapitation card was played one too many times, and the zombie horde’s feeding frenzy did nothing for me, but became a bit comical. The beginning of the film is supposed to be in medieval times, yet the female captives all have nicely shaven nether regions (and it looks like one has bikini bottoms on). And while I liked the look of Necronos, he was way too wordy and pointed a lot (even in the picture above), and even though he's supposed to be a demon, Goran looks like a mixture of Jason, Freddy, and Santo.

In all, it’s a pretty decent flick, one I’d definitely watch again, and will play at drunken parties. I look forward to seeing their other feature, and thanks again to Lars for sending this. I have high hopes for the Infernal Films camp, and expect much more bloodshed in years to come. If you’re a fan of German horror, check out the Brothers Rohnstock. It’s worth noting that Andreas Schnaas and Timo Rose helped with this film too, and if you look further into German underground horror, you'll see it's like a brotherhood, they're always helping with each other's films. So, maybe Goblet of Gore deserves another try, but until then, I'm gonna blow the dust off Premutos and give Ittenbach a whirl. Bis später!K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-64735990782225553572011-11-10T00:35:00.029-06:002011-11-28T21:13:53.897-06:00Free stuff I've won
What’s better than cheap shit? Free Shit. And, I sure do like winning, especially when it’s horror DVDs and such. I've had a fairly lucky streak over the past couple years, so I wanted to share with you some of my wares.

My latest win is from The Jaded Viewer, who I’ve drawn wisdom, humor, and inspiration from for several years now. Trying to get rid of some of his garbage movie screeners, he held a contest, and in order to be entered, all you had to do was leave a comment. Well, my comment won ("Even if you win a lump of shit, you’re still a winner"), and I got to choose from Ferocious Planet, Savage County, or After Dark Film’s Fertile Ground. I’d already seen two of the three, and didn’t have any interest in Ferocious Planet, so I chose to revisit Fertile Ground. So now, I sit here holding it in my hands as if it were my precious. I'd like to thank the Jaded one again for his hospitality, and please check out his site.

Earlier this year, from Dollar Bin Horror, I won a copy of the Stull DVD (a short movie about the supposed Gate to Hell located near Lawrence, KS), and a Michael Jackson Thriller Comic shirt.

My name was even announced on their radio show a little past the 57:40 mark, and can be heard here. You may need to watch the stupid commercial and let the file load for a minute before you can get there, but yeah, I played it back several times, just to hear my name (I'm egotistical like that).

A couple of Christmases ago, I won a copy of the Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 movie collection from Freddy In Space.

You've heard about his blog on here before, and if you haven't started frequenting it, you should now. When asked, "What’s the scariest thing about Christmas?", I said, “A zombie baby Jesus.” And eureka, out of 109 other comments, mine won. For once, my wit earned me more than a punch in the face or a kick in the nads.

A month or two before that, I won the Late Bloomer DVD from Fangoria magazine, but still have yet to watch it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 284px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-kjornfBwlft5uhS_Z3SIkmKJQeRdrIaRYov7Ei4oWi2eekbEgfzF48wlkgH4iqg7zW48xKZGWAqHkzPghS-eX3yntlM13ptDrk2Wvmw6KM_7zmoPk061aWaIY-UpBYisMTjEZ9sN0r9F/s400/late+bloomer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5673272161660229458" />
And, while it wasn't really won, but rather requested, Dr. Terror was nice enough to send me a pair of his exclusive 3D glasses, so I could view his 3D post. I already had a pair that would've worked, but wanted to be part of the "in" crowd, so I asked if he'd send me a pair, and he didn't even hesitate. I didn't have to say the secret word, do the handshake, take a beatdown, or anything. And, thanks to Freddy in Space for sharing the link, otherwise I wouldn't be a part of the 1%ers. Dr. T has some creative thougths and ideas, and also writes for the Blood Sprayer, so be a kind fellow (or lady) and follow his blog.

So, I guess all the time I’ve wasted on reading blogs and tinkering on the internet has really paid off. I also can’t forget those who have sent me screeners for review. While I know I still have some to watch, I thank you for having faith in my abilities, and taking time out of your busy schedules to send them. Also, a big thanks to my industry connections, who have sent me stuff over the years: Tony (Xploited Cinema), Kathy (Koch/eOne), Tony and Kim (Ryko/ADA/WEA), Terry (Magnolia Pictures), John (Hastings Ent.), Strand, Hart-Sharp, Alternative Cinema, Ariztical, and Wolfe. All of you have contributed to the success of this blog, and helped make my movie collection even more insane than I could have imagined.

And, as if I didn't have enough movies already, if you know someone who has a film (short or long) they’d like reviewed, just let me know. While my reviews and interests may seem a bit jaded, I’ll watch about anything, and the crazier the better. That's what makes being a part of the Side Show so much fun! Thanks to all who read this, and for Christmas I'm not asking for money, just pay it forward and tell a friend about this site. But if you must, gifts are always welcomed and appreciated. :)K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5371787248926226833.post-59361409058887728272011-10-31T15:26:00.013-05:002011-10-31T16:11:41.331-05:00Asshole of the Week: Best Buy

So, it’s Halloween day, and I felt the need to touch on a couple things that make big companies look like assholes. Sure, I could easily put Netflix here, and I’ve spoken several times about Warner, but this week it’s Best Buy, who I love and hate. While it seems like their in-store selection continues to dwindle, they do compete aggressively with Amazon and Target to offer the lowest movie prices and exclusives. So, what’s Big Blue done this time?

Not but a day after their Upgrade and Save promotion ended, they offer some of the same titles at $3 less than they were during the promotion, and with no trade-in needed. While these titles were $9.99 after the upgrade coupon, they are now just $6.99, and include Good Will Hunting and Trainspotting on Blu Ray. Sure, it’s only three bucks, but times are hard, and since several people picked these up with the prior promotion (and also had to give up a DVD), it makes it an asshole move. And, during that promotion, there were several titles that went up in price as the last week came to a close, which included all three Friday the 13th Blu Rays.

So, while this discounting giant does offer some great deals, my gripes are 1) keep the Upgrade and Save prices the same throughout the entire promotion, because trying to squeak another $5 out of certain titles (probably the faster moving ones) during the last week, is not only assholish, but quite greedy, and 2) don’t offer titles at lower prices a mere day (or even a few weeks) after the promotion ends. Sadly, this happens with new releases too, where the price drops a couple bucks cheaper than the first week’s sale price, yet it's still within the first three weeks of release.

So, while I’d really like to support new titles, I have to ask, why buy a new movie on street date/week, when it’s just going to be cheaper less than a month later? It’s like paying full price for clothes (who does that?), when a sale is sure to be right around the corner. And, while it’s great for the consumer who waits, it’s stunts like this that cause entertainment to be extremely devalued when reselling it (how often do you see under $5 DVDs or under $10 Blu Rays?), and may be a contributor to why Hollywood and the film industry are in the shitter. So, our Asshole of the Week goes to Best Buy.K-Fleethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891675701304047146noreply@blogger.com0
